The Watooka Complex, which was said to have derived its name from the nearby Watooka creek, is situated in the mining town of Linden. Built in the 1940’s, it is one of the oldest Colonial buildings in the area. The three storey wooden building features scenic views of the majestic Demerara River and lush grounds. When you step inside this authentic wooden structure, it’s a different feeling where the lungs choose to fill a little deeper while its beauty captivates your soul. You can walk among the same palm trees that were planted by H.R.H. Princess Alice, the Countess of Athlone and the Earl of Athlone during her visit to Watooka Complex between March 19th to the 21st in 1950.

The Watooka Complex has satisfied the needs for luminaries from all over the world. They came by air, river and road for various reasons and periods. It is said that most of all they came for the comfort, courtesies and atmosphere. His Excellency Sir Alfred Savage, former Governor of British Guiana remarked after his last visit in 1953 – “the people here are the happiest in the entire country”. A visit to the town of Linden is wasted if a visit to the Watooka Club is not included. As a guest, your understanding of our heritage will be complete.
