Many Guyanese came home for the 53rd Independence Anniversary. Many would have enjoyed revelry of the Carnival fetes and concerts but for those who wanted a taste of home to bring back the nostalgia of Linden in its heyday, then the newly rehabilitated Watooka House was the place to be for both Guyanese and foreigners.

Infused with history, charm and authenticity, Watooka House is the ultimate experience for those searching for something that goes above and beyond sunshine and relaxation.

Watooka House offers a unique glimpse of a bygone era combined with all the luxuries of the modern age.

It is a three-storey early 20th century colonial building which originated as a privately-owned establishment. During the early 1900s, after the demand for aluminium brought many foreign businessmen and officials to the booming mining town, it was renovated by the Demerara Bauxite Company (DEMBA) to accommodate its managers.

In the 1940s, it was renamed Watooka House, the name Watooka originating from the nearby Watooka Creek. The front façade of the guest house faces the Demerara River, while access can be gained from Casuarina Drive, Mackenzie.

Architectural features on the first and second floors include the wide overhangs, enclosed corridors on most facades, and extended galleries which now sports modern glass windows replacing the colonial style Jalousie windows.

Watooka House evokes the charm of a riverside plantation. It sweeps you away with striking views and lush tropical scenery in a picturesque setting with scenic views of the Demerara River and lush grounds with its palm-lined lanes.
Imagine taking a stroll to explore the scenic grounds surrounded by huge Century palms and many fruit trees, which provide an exclusive feeling of getting away from it all and relaxing with nature.

Visitors are surrounded by picture-perfect scenery – with the sounds of Guyana’s exotic birds and the stunning array of indigenous plants, flowers and trees; one will genuinely understand what it means to be in paradise, making Watooka the ideal place for your getaway.

Sunsets glow in a dazzling display of colour while you reconnect in an unforgettable moment with gentle cooling breeze from the Demerara River.

You can enjoy breakfast on the deck over the river, or enjoy intimate candle light dinners in the Gazebo. Watooka House is the ultimate experience for those searching for something that goes above and beyond sunshine and relaxation.
Watooka offers a unique glimpse of a bygone era combined with all the luxuries of our modern age.
